The Czech Republic is full of forests, but the most famous is the Bohemian Forest or Sumava in the south. The name Sumava comes from the word for sound of leaves - so it is the rustling forest. The Sumava is a national park because of its unspoilt landscapes and nature. The area boasts not just forests, but also mountain pastures rich in meadow flowers and glacial lakes. The area is very suited to all outdoor pursuits.

Some sights of interest in the Sumava

  • Boubin Forest - a primeval forest just like the ones in fairy stories
  • Kasperk Castle - an impressive medieval castle built overlooking the forest
  • the Sumava boglands - some of these bogs have wooden walkways allowing you to walk into the bogs to see the rare plants, birds and animals
  • well marked cycle routes which turn into cross-country skiing routes in the Winter
  • the Sumava’s lakes - walk to one of the natural glacial lakes such as the Black Lake (left photo above) or visit man-made Lake Lipno with its facilities for sailing, surfboarding and skating.
  • the River Vydra - a beautiful mountain river named after the otter, which can be seen at a sanctuary on the river
  • the area is famous for birdwatching - local birds include the black grouse, rosefinch, corncrake, ural owl.
  • at Bucina visit a segment of the Iron Curtain and walk a trail which takes through villages destroyed to make way for the frontier
  • on the borders of the Sumava are the old towns of Kaspersky Hory, Vimperk and Prachatice which grew rich on the trade along the old pack route - the Golden Trail.
