The Czech Republic may not have any sea but it certainly has a lot of ponds and lakes. Many were built centuries ago to provide fresh fish for the table. The area around Trebon is famous for these - with over fifty ponds/lakes to enjoy. The Trebonsko Lakes are recognised as being internationally important for their plants, animals and especially their birds - they are a listed UNESCO biosphere. Another feature of the area is the forested bogs - which again are remarkable for their natural history. Add to this natural wealth flat countryside which is easy to cycle and walk in and lovely old towns and villages and you have a perfect destination.

What to see in the Czech Lakelands

  • the Velky and Maly Tisy ponds are renowned for their birdlife, including the spectacular white-tailed eagle (central picture above), penduline tit, bluethroat and many types of waterfowl
  • Trebon Castle - medieval and renaissance castle
  • spas - the health-giving qualities of the area’s peat and water resulted in the creation of two major spa and health centres in Trebon. You can follow a day cycling with a massage.
  • walks around the area - there are a number of well-signposted trails in the area. We recommend the trail around the Svet  and as “Svet” means “world” in Czech you can honestly tell your friends you’ve walked around the world
  • the pond/landscape exhibition centre in Trebon,
  • picturesque historic Trebon has a Gothic/Renaissance town centre,
  • the carp harvest - an incredible event which takes place in Autumn
  • the Cerveny Blata bogwalk - a boarded walkway which takes you into the centre of the bog to view its plants and animals
  • Jindrichuv Hradec on the edge of the lakelands has a huge medieval castle, the National Museum of Photography, lovely gothic churches and town centre.
