Holidays in Czech Paradise

kost-castle

There is a good reason why this area got the name of Czech Paradise (Cesky Raj or Bohemian Paradise) - it is the most beautiful of areas, with its sandstone rock towers (“rock towns”), pine forests, lakes and ponds. Add to these charming traditional wooden cottages and rugged castles and you have a perfect tourist area. It is relatively small (700 sq. kms), easily accessible from Prague by public transport and as such is highly suitable for a short break, perhaps as part of a two-centre holiday.

Some sights of interest

  • The rock towns: explore the labyrinths of narrow ravines at the foot of sandstone towers, which can rise up to 90 metres, and climb stairs carved in to the stone to stand on the viewpoints above. The most famous are Prachovske Skaly rocks (central photo above)
  • The area’s many castles - such as Kost castle (right photo) and ruined Trosky (left photo)
  • Folk architecture - villages with log-built farms facing onto a village green or pond, as at Vesec u Sobotky
  • The Museum of Bohemian Paradise - which includes not just local archaeology and folk history, but also the precious stones that are found in the area.
  • Diverse nature: the wide range of landscapes and geology in the area results in a wide range of flowers and wildlife.

Getting to Czech Paradise

You will probably want to hire a car to drive to Czech Paradise - the fastest connection from Prague is along the R10 (E65) via Mlada Boleslav or along the D11. We recommend using the Carrentals Search Engine to get the best deal.

If you want to use public transport the quickest link to Jicin from Prague is by direct coach (1 hr 20 mins). Trains require a change (journey time 2hrs 30 mins). There are however direct trains to Turnov (1hr 45 mins), the other main town in Czech Paradise. Some trains carry bikes.

Getting around

If you haven’t hired a car, you have lots of transport options:

  • During the peak summer season, special tourist buses connect the main sights, train stations and offer bike transport.
  • Local trains link Jicin with Turnov - one of the most popular railway journeys in the Czech Republic as it offers splendid views and takes you close to the starting points of some of the best walks. You can also take your bike with you on the train.
  • The area is a walker’s paradise. There are well-signposted footpaths throughout Czech Paradise. The main footpaths are colour-coded. Many of the rock formations can only be explored on foot.
  • Czech Paradise is criss-crossed by well-marked cycle paths, which visit the most interesting places, including the rock towns. Bikes can be hired from the hotel or from a number of suppliers in the town.
