Holidays in South Bohemia

Bohemian ruined castle
South Bohemian village Bohemian wooded landscape

South Bohemia is probably the most unspoilt region of the Czech Republic. Parts of South Bohemia have their own pages on this website: Czech Forest, Czech Lakelands and Czech Canada. This page covers the areas around Cesky Krumlov and Ceske Budejovice

The countryside around Cesky Krumlov consists of wooded hills and steep river valleys. The area around Ceske Budejovice is flatter farmland with orchards and fishponds; some ponds in particular Dehtar are important birdwatching sites. All parts of South Bohemia are packed with historic castles (such as Divci Kamen photo left above), abbeys, towns and villages (such as Holasovice central photo).

Some sights of interest in

  • Divci Kamen Castle (photo above) built on a headland overlooking the River Vltava
  • Holasovice - a UNESCO listed village which is a perfect example of the type of folk architecture you will find in this region)
  • Cesky Krumlov - uniquely well-preserved town centre (UNESCO world heritage site) with over 300 listed buildings and massive castle
  • Ceske Budejovice -fascinating city, with historic medieval centre, Budweiser Budvar brewery, great shopping and eating

  • cycling and walking  - the area offers well signposted cycle routes and footpaths for all levels of ability
  • cultural activities - both Cesky Krumlov and Ceske Budejovice have festivals throughout the year offering all types of music
