Tabor in the north of South Bohemia is a remarkable historic town. The town was built in the 14th century by the Hussites, the followers of church reformer Jan Hus, as a military stronghold. The town celebrated its Hussite past with the annual festival the Tabor Meeting (photo right above). The town centre features many historic buildings with ornately decorated gables and frontages.

Some sights of interest in Tabor

  • Hussite Museum - a museum about the Hussite movement,
  • Kutnov Tower - part of the town fortifications, the tower houses a museum about life in the middle ages
  • Underground tunnels - explore the extensive tunnels under the town
  • Tabor Meeting - the annual three day festival with a massive historic procession (see photo right above)
  • Tabor Treasure Exhibition - an exhibition about a trove of medieval coins
  • Klokoty - a baroque pilgrimage church.

The surrounding area

  • Bechyne - take the historic train to this lovely spa town with its chateau and Dominican Monastery
  • Ales Gallery of Ceramics in Bechyne - an internationally important collection
  • Chynov Cave - limestone cave, the largest cave in the Czech Republic
  • Valley of the Luznice - you can walk or canoe up the river through lovely wooded valleys
  • typical buildings of South Bohemian folk baroque are in the villages of Zaluzi, Vlastibor,  Komarov, Klec¨aty, Zalsi and Masice

Stays in Tabor can be combined with stays elsewhere, such as Prague, Ceske Budejovice and Cesky Krumlov, or a week in a country cottage.
