Bohemian/Moravian Highlands

The Bohemian/Moravian Highlands (Vysocina) are perhaps less well-known as tourist area than neighbouring South Bohemia but they have a lot to offer the visitor. Forested undulating hills (see photo left) dominate the landscape. Towns in Vysocina tend to be small but some are spectacular - Trebic and Telc have UNESCO World Heritage site status and Litomysl another World Heritage site is close to the Highlands.

Some sights of interest in Bohemian/Moravian Highlands

  • Zdar nad Sazavou is famous for its Baroque pilgrimage church (photo right) which has UNESCO World Heritage site status.
  • Vysocina Open Air Museum (photo central) - two collections of folk buildings of the Vysocina (Hlinsko Betlem and Vesely Kopec)
  • Trebic Jewish Quarter - one of the few Jewish ghettos left in Europe and Jewish cemetery (UNESCO-listed)
  • Trebic Basilica of St Procopius - UNESCO-listed Romanesque/gothic church
  • Telc - one of the most beautiful towns in the Czech Republic its UNESCO-listed town centre is focused on a triangular square lined with Renaissance houses
  • the Zdar Peaks - one of the most unspoilt landscapes of the Czech Republic, popular with walkers and climbers
  • the Iron Hills or Zelezny Hory (photo left above) - a protected landscape which boasts the most complex geological structure in Europe and mysterious forests
  • Pernstejn castle - one of the best preserved castles in the Czech Republic
  • Litomysl - although not in the Vysocina UNESCO-listed Litomsyl is close by.

Getting to Bohemian/Moravian Highlands

  • There are direct trains from Prague to Havlickuv Brod and Jihlava, and direct buses to Trebic and Trebic.
  • There are direct trains from Trebic, Jihlava, Havlickuv Brod and direct buses to Jihlava, Trebic, Telc, and Litomysl.
