Holidays in the Czech Republic

Austria, Germany, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia

Brno is the capital of Moravia and the second largest city in the Czech Republic. The city has plenty to offer the visitor. It has a very different feel to Prague - more relaxed with a strong cafe culture. It is a city of art and music, with festivals and galeries galore. Architecturally whilst Brno has some Gothic buildings, the city's heyday was in the 19th and 20th century, so Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modernist buildings abound. Ryanair and Wizzair offer direct flights to Brno from the UK, and so it is the perfect place for a short city break or the starting point for exploring Moravia.

Some sights of interest in Brno

  • Moravian Museum - the displays of the golden jewellery of the Great Moravian Empire and the Old Stone Age Venus statues are particularly worth seeing
  • Villa Tugendhat - the modernist architectural masterpiece created by Mies van der Rohe in the 1920s
  • the Cappuccin Monastery with its mummified monks
  • the labyrinth of tunnels under the city
  • Brno's many excellent shops and restaurants
